Introdution

Ship Recycling Industries Association (India) is an organisation established for the welfare of ship recycling activity in India. It safeguards the rights of its member ship recyclers and ensures safe and eco-friendly recycling activity. Shri R.L. Kalthiya founded the Ship Recycling Industries Association on 28th August 1983 which was then known as Gujarat Ship Breakers Association. He was the pioneer in development of the association. His noble work for the industry and association is noteworthy. The incorporation of the association not only protected its members but also helped the industry to blossom and develop into the largest ship recycling yard in the world.

Mr. Vishnu Kumar Gupta, now president of the association, is leading the industry to re-establish itself with improved infrastructure and better environment and safety standards. The industry is looking forward to have a new look ship-recycling yard at Alang in coming years. Mr. Vishnu Kumar Gupta's vision is of Alang as World’s Largest and Safest Ship Recycling Yard in the coming years. The Industry is committed to continual improvement in safety standards and environment pollution control processes.

Welfare Activities

Labour welfare activities:

  • Industry extends financial assistance for the facilities and equipments of Red Cross hospital at Alang
  • Fully equipped mobile hospital to handle emergencies, and free medical check-up for workers and their family is provided by the industry.
  • Medical camps for diagnosis and treatment of workers at the yard being organized by the association.
  • Visiting team of IMO/ILO/Basel/JSA/JICA/EURPEAN UNION etc… expressed their satisfaction over the improvements of safety and environment that have taken place at Alang. They were not only impressed but astonished to see the actual picture of Alang.
  • Regular safety training programs are conducted and audio-visual training is given to the workers.
  • Health awareness camps are organized on regular basis.
  • Safety Audit is conducted jointly by GMB and SRIA on regular basis.
  • Different ‘ MOCK-DRILLS” being organized for various types of emergencies occurs into the plots.
  • Regular “TRAINING PROGRAMMES” for health awareness being conducting in to plots with the help of Bhavnagar Blood Bank.( audio-visual presentation)
  • Regular health check-up is being done for all work deputed into the plots.
  • Construct “ LABOUR HOUSING COLONY” for 1008 workers.

Social welfare activities:

  • Generous contributions to the hospitals and charitable trusts in Bhavnagar.
  • Contribution towards CM Relief Funds and PM relief funds in the eventuality of natural calamities.
  • Provides funds to various educational institutions and various health centre in Bhavnagar
  • Provides funds to educational schools in surrounding area of Alang regularly.
  • Handsome contributions towards PM’S RELIEF FUND during Kargil war and Tsunami, Clean Ganga Project, COVID-19 PANDAMIC etc…
  • Distribution of more than 2000 nos. of “OXYGEN CYLLNDERS” and “ FLOW METER” for about 2 months during May-June 2021 at ‘FREE OF COST’ to the patients suffering from COVID-19 required Oxygen artificially.
  • Rescue operations debris clearance during the Gujarat Earthquake
  • The construction of 4 primary schools in Kutch region is fully sponsored by industry.
  • Association also organizes and participates in the national and international trade fares.
  • Set up Disaster Management Centre at Bhavnagar for government and regularly contributing funds as when required.
  • Sponsoring “MARATHONE - BHAVNAGAR” since last 3-4 years regularly.
  • Financial grant to the families of martyrs of Bhavnagar district.

Association Events

1.Training Programs :

Capsule training programs on “Safe handling of Crane Operations” & “Training for Safe Operation of Winch” was organized by SRIA under the guidance of GMB and it was for short duration On the Job Training. The response from the members as well as from the workers was overwhelming. Certificates were awarded to workers and the plot holders in token of active participation in training programme. Other such capsule trainings are under way.

2.SRIA launched a Magazine, “Alang- A Green Re-Incarnation”

Past Presidents Shri R.L.Kalathia, Shri H.K.Agarwal, Shri V.K.Gupta together with pioneers of Alang Shri Shivalal Jerambhai Dathawala, Shri Pawan kumar Jain with Shri Jiverajbhai Patel inaugurated/ launched the magazine for celebration of completion of 30 years of Alang-Sosiya Ship Recycling Yard. All were impressed with the launching of magazine as it was a need of time.

The past presidents cherished their past in this activity, challenges they had experienced and blessed the Association for all round development and wished best of luck in the days to come.
